Do you want to learn how to make great sourdough bread everyday with minimal effort and to suit your schedule? If so then this course is for you - or for your spouse/relative/friend as a present!


Discover Sourdough

In this intensive five hour course (9.30am – 2.30pm), I will teach you everything I know about how to make sourdough work around busy lives - I baked almost every day for a year whilst working as a teacher and being dad to two young daughters. It is possible and it will make a difference to how you perceive bread. The health benefits of sourdough are still somewhat of a scientific mystery but, once you’ve experienced it, you just can’t argue with the fact that regularly eating authentic sourdough bread (not commercial bread) makes you feel good!


Tailored to you

I am not a professionally trained baker; I am a fully qualified and experienced maths teacher who knows how to make great sourdough bread. I can use my teacher training to pass on my bread knowledge effectively, helping you to understand and execute the techniques required to make it. I will teach you every step of the process and provide individual consultation on how to manipulate the variables to make the dough work around your schedule. You will get access to my online video tutorials that will allow you to relive the course when you get back home and help you to start making great sourdough every day, or as frequently as you wish. This is not intended to be a baking experience day (although it is of course that as well!) – it is aimed at people who want to kick-start their sourdough journey and begin baking real bread frequently at home, straight away.


Focusing on the basics

I will focus entirely on my main bread recipe and pass on all my knowledge of the detailed techniques and processes involved, including how to maintain an active starter culture. Other courses may cover many different recipes and types of bread, but I feel that this would dilute the level of detail required for me to teach you how to truly master basic sourdough bread. Once I’ve equipped you with the skills and understanding of how to make the basic bread, there are plenty of books/recipes/courses out there to help you diversify your range, if that’s what you want to do.


Immersive, fun and relaxed

The day will be a fun and immersive experience, shared with other like-minded people who want learn more about sourdough. We will enjoy a bread-based lunch together, which will allow you to sample a couple of different levels of sourness, achieved through extended cold proofing schedules. We will also have some mid-morning refreshments that showcase what you can do with any left over starter. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions throughout the day, in a relaxed and friendly environment with a maximum of just four people.


Additional Equipment Pack

The optional extras pack which I’ve put together includes lots of helpful additional kit but this is not essential; to bake sourdough effectively at home you do just need a couple of key items: notably a set of digital weighing scales and a casserole pot with a lid (ideally made of cast iron). I can provide recommendations for these if you don’t already have them at home.


Please note: If you have a long journey home after the course then please bring a cool bag and ice block to help stop your dough from over-proofing on the ride home!
